 About Scottish Freemasonry

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest secular fraternal organisations which comprises of a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values. Contrary to popular belief Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. Membership is open to men of good repute regardless of race or religion the only essential qualification is a belief in a Supreme Being.

For many years Freemasons have followed three great principles, which they believe represent a way of achieving higher standards in all walks of life:

  • Brotherly Love
Every true Freemason will show tolerance and respect for the opinions of others and behave with kindness and understanding to his fellow creatures.
  • Relief
Freemasons are taught to practice charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole, both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.
  • Truth
Freemasons strive for truth, requiring high moral standards and aiming to achieve them in their own lives.

The great principle of relief was historically fulfilled through brethren helping to support and relieve the suffering of fellow Masons and their dependants. These acts of kindness and support still continue today and have extended to include support of individuals and organisations within the wider community. or more information about Scottish Freemasonry, our Foundation and how you can become involved in your local Lodge please feel free to contact us.
