CanTeen's mission is to support, develop and empower young people living with cancer. They do this by providing an Australia wide peer support network for 12 to 24 year olds, including: Patient Members (diagnosed with cancer), Sibling and Offspring Members (a young person whose sibling or parent has been diagnosed with cancer) and Bereaved Sibling and Offspring Members (where a family member has died from cancer).
They provide members with a place where they can simply be young people, away from the daily pressures of living with cancer, at home or in the hospital. CanTeen runs over 200 programs for 4000 members across Australia every year. They are designed to bring young people living with cancer together to share their stories and experiences, learn new skills, challenge themselves, build confidence and have some fun.
CanTeen is a young person led organisation with young people holding formal leadership positions at every level, so it is important that they support their present youth leaders and develop leaders of the future. The Scottish Masonic Charitable Foundation of WA is proud to provide support of CanTeen and in particular The WA Leadership Program which is a two night camp on Rottnest where 25 current and future CanTeen leaders are invited to develop and enhance the skills required to hold a formal position on their TeenLink peer support program or the WA Committee. The program focuses on practical leadership skills such as project management, public speaking, networking, communication and team motivation. These skills will be transferable to future leadership and community building positions in other contexts.
