WA Deaf Society

WA Deaf

The WA Deaf Society was established by a group of 12 Deaf people to serve the needs of the Deaf community in 1921. In its early history, the focus was more a social organisation than a service provider. Over the decades there has been a shift in emphasis to provide support, community education, interpreting and employment services specifically tailored to meet the needs of Deaf and hard of hearing people.

Language and communication skills are vital to be able to participate fully in society. Did you know that 95% of deaf children are born to hearing parents who are unable to communicate effectively with their deal child or provide a suitable language model from which the child can acquire language.

ABC...easy as 1,2,3

This is true for most children but what if your child couldn't hear the alphabet song or what each letter sounded like. How easy would learning to read, write and talk be then?

The Deaf Society is contacted by many families experiencing difficulty with communicating and teaching their children basic educational and developmental stepping stones many of us take for granted.

Deaf children often experience relationship problems in school, which can make them feel isolated. could you imagine being the only Deaf child in your class? Communication is vital for establishing relationships with others. A common language ensures language and learning development occurs.

It is internationally documented that Deaf and hard of hearing children often experience chronic communication and social isolation within and outside their family. this places them at greater risk of developing poor self worth and mental health concerns such as depression in later years.

The Society's Success through Adult Role Models (STAR) Mentor program will provide Deaf and hard of hearing children with social connection, positive coping strategies and communication skills vital for lifelong wellbeing.

The SMCFWA is proud to support the WA Deaf Society and the STAR program. For more information please visit http://www.deaf.org.au/
